Yes. Under the Private Security Industry Act 2001, every front-line security guard must hold a valid SIA licence. Working without one is a criminal offence.
An SIA licence is only granted after passing a criminal record check. The applicant must also complete accredited training. This covers physical intervention, emergency procedures, fire safety and legal powers.

BS 7858 is the British Standard for screening security personnel. It goes further than the SIA minimum requirement.
It covers five years of employment history. It includes criminal record checks, financial background and personal references. You know exactly who is working on your site before they arrive.
Cost depends on the hours required, the type of site and the level of experience needed. As a general guide, static guarding ranges from around seventeen to twenty-five pounds per hour.
